Summarising/retelling is an important element of reading. It is important that children are reading for a purpose and understand what they are reading. After reading a story I like to use the Retelling Hand to help us to retell what we have just read.
When you settle down to listen to your child read, there are some things to do before they start reading.
Here's how to help your child to figure out the word they are stuck on when reading. Don't tell them the word, instead use these strategies to help THEM read the word. You should use these at home when listening to your child read aloud. I use "CHUNKY MONKEY" and "TRYIN LION" the most. I have placed the most useful ones in the slideshow below.
